With 4:37 to play in the second quarter of a Monday night game against the Bulls, Jeremy Lin was lining up to play defense against Bulls guard Derrick Rose, the league’s reigning MVP and the No. 1 draft pick in the NBA’s 2008 draft. As talented as he is—there isn’t a point guard in the league who matches Rose for his combination of speed and strength—Rose is generally mild-mannered on the court. But he seemed especially animated on this night.

Rose took an outlet pass from teammate Taj Gibson about 70 feet from the basket and quickly surveyed the floor. He got to the top of the 3-point line and made a jab step to the left, throwing Lin off his balance before Rose bolted hard to the right. Lin tried to recover, but Rose scooped up the ball in his right arm, the way an NFL running back cradles a football, put his shoulder into Lin’s chest and drove to the basket. Knicks center Josh Harrellson came over, attempting to provide help on defense, but Rose finished the layup for a basket.

After Lin responded by throwing a crafty deep pass to Carmelo Anthony for a fast-break basket, Rose just looked annoyed—he again drove down and set Lin up at the top of the 3-point line, this time leaning into Lin as he took a 16-foot jumper to draw a foul, against Lin’s protestations. On the Bulls’ next possession, Rose again attacked Lin, and gave the referee a brief look of disgust when he failed to call a reach-in foul. Rose shook off the noncall, sized up Lin again, and blew past him to the left, beating Lin to the hoop by two strides and again finishing a layup off the backboard.
