Atlantic City casinos have been stuck in a terrible downward spiral for the better part of three years, and analysts have been suggesting that the only way to turn the city’s gaming fortunes around would be to open a new facility or two. In April, these analyst predictions will be tested when the Revel resort opens to the public. Revel is a project that has been in the works for several years. The economic recession of 2008 caused developers to stop construction of the new facility, and it has sat dormant for months after the recession. Eventually, the project was restarted, and now the resort will open, although limited at first. Over the first month and a half, Revel will only open certain parts of their establishment. Gaming and dining options will be limited until a grand opening in late May. At that time, many believe the resort could be the key to a revival of gaming in New Jersey. “We have had a tough go of it the past few years,” said Sandra Lebow, a dealer at one of the AC casinos. “Although I work for another casino, it will be good to have a big modern resort open. I think it will bring excitement to the entire area, and it will help us bring in new customers that maybe before, didn’t want to come to Atlantic City.”
The biggest problem for Revel and other AC casinos is the booming gaming industry in Pennsylvania. Analysts are predicting that by the end of the year, Pennsylvania casinos may pass New Jersey casinos in terms of overall revenue. The Revel gives AC casino executives hope that with a new facility will come increased exposure. Among the attractions at Revel will be over seven restaurants, meeting space, a 5,500 capacity theatre, a shops, and a casino. The expectations are high, but they also have many people excited. “I can’t wait. I’ve been coming to the same casinos for over ten years,” said Robert Troller. “It will be great to have something new to check out next time I make my way to Atlantic City.”
