When Bob Kraft, owner of the NFL’s New England Patriots, had a new stadium built for the football team, he envisioned it as an entertainment center that would be a major attraction in Massachusetts. Aside from the football games, which operate only during the season, all year people can go to the stadium and enjoy the fun at Patriot Place, which includes trendy bars and clubs, a movie theater, hotel, retail stores and more. Now Kraft wants to bring a casino to Foxboro as well.
Kraft and casino operator Steve Wynn have plans to bring a casino to the stadium, but those plans have hit a roadblock. The city ordinance has a 300-foot height limit for buildings and a casino would be taller than that. The Foxboro planning board would have to approve revising the zoning regulations to allow the casino.
Thursday night, hundreds of Foxboro residents attended the planning board’s meeting to discuss the matter. Some of the residents support the idea of a local casino and the jobs it would create. Resident Daniel Flynn told the Boston Herald that the town is deep in debt and a casino could “stave off a fiscal calamity.” Most of the residents in attendance, however, spoke out in opposition to a casino. Opponents worried about traffic problems and increased crime. “I’ve traveled to places like Las Vegas and Mississippi, and I’ve seen human tragedies,” said resident Jeanne Lightbody. “I don’t want to look at that in Foxboro.”
The planning board rejected the proposal to remove the high restriction. What that doesn’t necessarily mean there will be no casino, it will make bringing a casino to the town considerably more difficult.
