UFC Star Georges St-Pierre Joins 888

UFC star Georges St-Pierre is set to tackle another sport as he rehabs an injury, signing with 888 as a brand ambassador in a deal that will see him take to the poker tables for the upcoming World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

St-Pierre released the following statement about the deal, which will also help raise money for the anti-bullying foundation that he has started:

”I am very excited to become a global brand ambassador for Team 888poker. I have wanted to play poker for a while now as it is a great game of skill. It is not just your cards versus my cards; it is you versus your opponent. However, the most important aspect of my partnership with 888poker is that we are going to generate a great deal of money for my foundation that dedicates its efforts towards anti-bullying causes.”

Georges St-Pierre is recovering from knee surgery and has been out of action in the octagon since he defeated Jake Shields in 2011. While a fight with UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit upon his return, GSP will have his hands full at the poker tables until then as he looks to become the first UFC star to deliver a knockout at the felt at the WSOP.

As far as other UFC stars who have tried their hand at poker, Chuck Lidell spent time on the ESPN televised table in 2008 during his brief run in the $10,000 buy-in WSOP Main Event and welterweight Mike Swick finished 10th in a smaller WSOP event in 2010 for a $34,708 payday.

Georges St-Pierre joins Shane Warne as prominent sports stars who have signed sponsorship deals with 888, which has successfully marketed its online poker games to a more casual, recreational demographic that tends to enjoy other sports as well.
